Ask anyone why they’re in the restaurant business, be they chef or owner, and most will say because they love to feed people, always noting something about shared meals and hospitality. When disaster strikes, the industry types are remarkably quick and efficient, rallying together from coast-to-coast to cook, pour and host for a cause. Here’s a list of a few events happening around the country to aid victims of Hurricane Katrina.
The Brennan Family of the famed Commander’s Palace restaurant has established the New Orleans Hospitality Worker’s Disaster Relief Fund. Managed by Greater Houston Community Foundation (GHCF), 97% of the proceeds go directly to those in need.
“Save New Orleans Cocktail Hour” takes place on September 12th in watering holes from NYC to Las Vegas to Washington DC. Organized in part by Dale DeGroff, the cocktail king and founding president of the Museum of the American Cocktail located in the French Quarter. From 5PM-7PM, bartenders will pour classic NOLA cocktails (like the very au currant Pimm’s Cup and French 75) with proceeds going to the Museum’s Katrina Fund. Mixologists wanting to add their bar to the list should email Katrinafund@museumoftheamericancocktail.org.
